Twenty
Original Paintings by Eighteen African Artists
At this time we are
showcasing the talents of the individual artists below. Because we felt that
many of these paintings are interesting, unique, and have a certain intrinsic merit, we
decided that we would give the greatest opportunity we could to the widest
variety of talented Kenyan artists possible.
We hope that you can see the same flair and
competencies that we do! Some are budding talents while others are highly
skilled yet underappreciated artists. Either way, they are trying to make a
living. For almost everyone of them, this is the first time their talents have
been exposed to a wide international audience on the internet.
We're sorry that we don't have
biographical information about these artists, but rest assured they are original
Kenyan artists that are enjoying the exposure received on this website. If
anyone knows anything about these artists, or you would like to make an offer on
any of these paintings, please
let us
know!
And, if you like a variety of artists, as
seen on this page, be sure to see a similar page:

I'll miss this painting - it was on my wall! 12 July '07One of my favorite paintings on the website. I found this painting
in the Monaco Gallery at Valley Arcade in Nairobi, buried under a counter
and beneath a bunch of other paintings collecting dust. The woman who owns
the shop explained to me that Massudy was from Zaire, but it has been a
long time since she has seen him. This hippo is intense! He looks mean and
hungry!

| Hussein
Al' Amir: was born in Mombasa,
Kenya, and used to play in the narrow alleys of Old Town Mombasa.
The east coast of Africa including
Mombasa was in the past colonized by both the Oman Arabs and the
Portuguese. Today the streets of Old Town Mombasa reflect the Arab and
Latin architecture, rich in the Afro-Arab Swahili culture.
Through his paintings Hussein does not
want to forget the rich history of the development of the East African
coast.
"There is a lot of art in
nature", says Robert Karanja, "and a lot of it has not been
exploited. Our environment is rich but people are destroying it without
realizing what they are doing." |
| Peter
Mbuguah: Mbuguah is a graduate of the YMCA Craft Training Center
and is known for his colorful and cryptic surrealist paintings. Working
with bright vibrant colors, or muted shades of purple and green, Mbugua
reveals his dreamy perspective of life in Kenya. |
| Robert
Karanja: Like many artists, Robert visualizes his world
through art as a way of expression and communication. Still a young man,
his work is yet to be fully appreciated. He works in mainly pencil -
beautiful sketches of people and animals in hues of black and gray.
A self-taught artists he likes to do
traditional sketches of old people and animals. Women are another
one of his favorites they are more interesting than men, especially
today's rural women. "Old people are also interesting to sketch
because their wrinkles add such interesting facial expressions"
Robert adds, "Our forefathers lived different from us and my
sketches show people from a bygone era."
Many of Karanja's sketches are his own
creations, inspired by African literature. "Most people have
forgotten our traditional way of life. I read about it in books and then
draw from it what I perceive in my mind"
Robert's inspiration into the world of
art has been Ng'ang'a Mkuna who is a well respected local artist. Another
of Robert's favorite artist is David Shepherd because he has done so
much for the preservation of the wildlife through his art. |
