George Thiaru

George Thiaru is a husband of one wife and has two children. Born in 1967 in Karura location Kiambu district. Thairu was educated in Wangunyu primary school until 1982 and later he was admitted in Kirangari High School. He did his O-levels in 1986.

Shortly after leaving school, he started the working as a sign writer as well as making logo designs. His main customers were secondary schools, churches and in private institutions. In 1994 he took his first works to the popular Gallery Watatu. The Gallery was very interested in his work and continued to purchase his works as fast as he was able to produce them.

His paintings are normally in oil colors. They are complex scenes which depict everyday life in a unique and often very colorful and abstract way. Thairu's paintings have been featured in many calendars and magazines.

In 1997 he won a second prize at the Kenya National Museum for the East Africa competition.
In 1997 he had a special mention award of paintings of which was held at Inter Continental Hotel. He has exhibited both local and abroad.

Thairu is member of Banana hill art studio.

21 June 2006 - Unfortunate news of the demise of George Thairu. I was at the Banana Hill Art Gallery when  learned that George Thairu had died of liver problems. Many of the Banana Hill studio artists will be attending the funeral which is scheduled for 26 June. We here at Inside African Art regret the passing of such a talented artist. Pole Sana.
