Jane Wanjeri

I wish I had some biographical information on Jane Wanjeri. I have been promised this, but it hasn't made it to me yet. When I finally get it, I will post it here.

All I can tell you at this point is she is a... she! One of only a very few female artists on this website. I have tried to find others, but it is difficult for women to 'give it up' to be an artists in Kenya. Traditionally it has always been men who have enjoyed learning and practicing in the arts, really any type of art. But this is slowly changing as women take a larger role in the pursuit of supporting their families.

The name Wanjeri tells me, and my Kikuyu wife who has a sister named Njeri, that this artist is also a Kikuyu - meaning, she is from central Kenya - from Nairobi north to Mt. Kenya and then east. However, the Kikuyu are Kenya's largest tribe and are everywhere in Kenya. I'm really just making logical assumptions. Definitely though, Kikuyu.

Wanjeri's style caught my eye because of the attention to detail and the desire to express a story, or impart some kind of wisdom on the viewer. The 'homestead' paintings look to me to be museum-staged scenes that give you an opportunity to peer into the lives within a typical Kikuyu or Maasai village. The Maasai Homestead has got it all: traditional dancing, milking a goat, a baby goat, cattle herding, boiling milk, a shield, traditional Maasai board game, manyatta, shukas, acacias, weaver birds - fantastic! It's a veritable panorama of Maasai life!
