"Peace is costly, but
worth the expense." -Kikuyu of Kenya proverb David Munyua, or Jaa, as he is known, was born in 1972 in the Kambuku village of Kiambu, Kenya. While in secondary school he developed an interest in art after visiting and then gaining encouragement from some of Kenya's most renowned artists. Inspired, he went on to create a style of oil painting all his own. His paintings are distinctive in the sense that his stylized characters, usually women, are very round-faced, and usually exhibit a subtle, often loving emotion. The faces fill the canvas, which is usually only shared with a single additional item. Though the emotional aspect is fairly staid, the colors are bright and well defined. Jaa first rose to prominence in 1998 when he exhibited in Germany at the Museum Volker Kunde. Often seen in pairs, Jaa's paintings are fairly easy to find in Nairobi as he is a popular artist.
