Joshua Mainga Josh Mainga was surfing the Internet one day and came across his father's paintings on this website. He, too, is an artist and inquired about submitting his paintings fro promotion and marketing. I gladly agreed as his father, the famous John Mainga, was an extraordinary talent and I would be proud to represent him if only as a way to connect to his father's legacy. However, it must be in the genes - Josh Mainga's paintings, though similar to his fathers', stand on their own. From Josh's bio: I was born in Nairobi to an artist and a humble farmer and grew up and studied in Nairobi. I got my interest for arts through my father the late JOHN BEN MAINGA who was famed for his leather and canvas batiks having exhibited in most Galleries across Europe, U.S.A and East Africa. Having learnt the practice by observation and by my involvement in my father’s work, I decided to take after my father in re-telling the numerous stories and folklore that I had heard from both my father and grandfather though my brushes on canvas using acrylics just like my father. I did not attend any art college but in 1998, I participated in my first joint exhibition at the Kenya Museum while still in High School to try out my hand in arts. From the positive response that I received, I decided to take on art as my career and since 2001; I have participated in various joint exhibitions at the Kenya Museums, Essajee Amijee Gallery, Braeburn School Art Fairs and RaMoMA gallery. I have been featured in various exhibitions like the ‘Little and Large’ Exhibition and the ‘Art Without Borders Kenya (Art and Dance)’ Exhibition of the RaMoMA. I am an independent abstract artist who mainly uses acrylics on canvas to create unique pieces about various traditional objects and lifestyles using unique, native and exotic patterns, shades, colours and feelings to represent the cultures, lifestyles, emotions and folklore of the Kenyan people.
