Vumilia -
Let's face it, AIDS is killing
Africans by the thousands everyday. The effects of a parent dying of
AIDS can disable a family to the point where the remaining parent cannot
function beyond taking care of the children - and when there is no
support for this parent, the children may not survive. Imagine the pain
a mother goes through watching helplessly as their children face
starvation.
Vulimia supports AIDS orphans and
widowed mothers in Western Kenya with counseling and connecting them
with others in their same condition. Together they pool their personal
resources and the resources that Vumilia provides to maintain their
lives and ensure the future of their children. It sounds simple, but
it's not. Survival to most of us is merely a word - survival to an HIV
positive mother of three is a daily challenge. Having a network of
support is paramount - Vumilia provides this.

Faie African Art
showcases outstanding artworks from all over Africa. The website is
dedicated to the fact that African art is not created as 'art for arts'
sake'. But it speaks of the connections to tradition, family, the
ancestor, and the belief in the Omnipresence of Spirit. |

KickStart
- formerly ApproTEC
- ApproTEC is a local NGO run by two very good friends of mine. The office in
Nairobi, Kenya, is now supplemented by an office in the U.S., primarily to raise
funds for the programs in Kenya. ApproTEC is a non-profit organization that
develops and markets new technologies in Africa. These low-cost technologies are
bought by local entrepreneurs, and used to establish highly profitable new small
businesses. They create new jobs and new wealth and allow the poor to climb out
of their poverty forever. Visit their website, it's very educational and gives
you a feel for the amount of effort it takes to change lives forever. |

MoneyMaker Pumps!
What a fantastic organization! More and more people are climbing out of
poverty in Africa, and across the world with this simple irrigation
pump. Ok, there is a line of pumps here: The Super MoneyMaker - two
cylinders - you use it like a stepping machine and it pumps out a LOT of
water. Then there is the MoneyMaker Plus - one cylinder - also pumped
with the legs and feet, works like a lung (breath in, breath out...suck
water, spray water:
irrigate your crops!). And finally there is the Hip Pump - it works like
a bicycle pump but is ergonomically suited to your body and makes it
easy to use your hip and lower body weight to pump water. Fantastic!
Nearly 100,000 of these pumps have been sold across the world! Please
see their websites to learn more - and contribute! Why am I touting them? It's because I worked for KickStart Africa for
quite some time, and the organization is pure positive energy, run by
the most interesting and fun group of people you can imagine. See that
logo at the right... my design! Ok, not 100% but like 90%... what great
fun! Poverty in Africa can be eradicated and
you can help! |

Kitengela
Glass - Incredible hand-blown glass, glass sculptures, glass windows,
and an assortment of astounding glass art - all from a bizarre
and ingenious glass compound on the outskirts of the Nairobi game park. Looking
one way in the park you can admire a beautiful giraffe and glancing the other
reveals the glass-blowing tower where all of the Kitengela glass is created.
